NEEP: Affordable Housing and Building Energy Codes

Download

Overview

This resource addresses the misconception that energy codes negatively impact affordable housing.

The United States needs more affordable housing, and a common misperception is that stricter energy codes will lead to additional costs for new projects, which will prevent projects from being constructed. The reality is that even with strict building energy codes, affordable housing can be constructed affordably and can yield additional benefits for building owners and their occupants. This resource is intended to address the misconception that energy codes negatively impact affordable housing, explain how energy codes have a significant positive impact on the health and safety of building occupants, and clarify how these codes provide monetary savings from reduced energy bills.
