Insulation Institute Report: Thermal Performance of Pipe Insulation

Overview

NAIMA's report details the thermal conductivity of fiberglass, mineral wool, and aerogel pipe insulation products under high process temperatures.

New: Report on Thermal Performance of Pipe Insulation

NAIMA has released a new report detailing the thermal conductivity of fiberglass, mineral wool, and aerogel pipe insulation products under high process temperatures. A specific test,  the ASTM C335, is prescribed for conducting such testing, which must be completed by an accredited testing facility.

NAIMA hired R & D Labs to conduct the test with the goal of learning how these insulation products perform under high process heat. The results of the testing show that:

  • Aerogel products experienced a reduction in thermal performance of as high as 20% under elevated temperatures.
  • Fiberglass and mineral wool specimens experienced less than 2% thermal performance degradation.
  • Designers, engineers, and end users should be aware that aerogel’s thermal performance degrades more than fiberglass and mineral wool pipe insulation when used with high process temperatures.
