West Virginia Wind Energy Apprenticeship Program

Clearway has launched a wind technician pilot apprenticeship program that will offer paid training to qualified individuals who have been impacted by the decline in West Virginia’s coal industry. The program is designed to provide an opportunity to start a new career in renewable energy by delivering the essential training needed to become a wind technician.

About Clearway’s West Virginia Pilot Apprenticeship Program

Clearway has launched a wind technician pilot apprenticeship program that will offer paid training to qualified individuals who have been impacted by the decline in West Virginia’s coal industry. The program is designed to provide an opportunity to start a new career in renewable energy by delivering the essential training needed to become a wind technician.

The apprenticeship training, which will be paid for by Clearway, is valued at over $20,000 and includes:

  1. Basic electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic principles at a training facility in Tehachapi, California.
  2. Safety training with Clearway instructors covering internal policies and procedures as well as certifying competency to climb and rescue in towers, if applicable.
  3. Technical training provided by the wind turbine or solar inverter manufacturer.

After successfully completing the training, a competitive offer may be made for employment at a Clearway wind energy facility.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicant or a family member has lost a job as a result of a coal facility layoff or shutdown in West Virginia within the last two years (2019-2021).
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and good driving record
  • Must have legal authorization to work in the U.S.
