Join BPA as Our Next Chief Executive Officer

We are searching for a dynamic and experienced leader to lead the Building Performance Association (BPA) in the role of Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The CEO will work closely with the Board of Directors, key staff, and critical stakeholder groups to drive the Association’s development and guide it toward long-term success. The CEO will serve as the main link among the different divisions within the organization and among the geographically distributed staff. The ideal candidate for this position has extensive CEO-level or senior management experience, and experience in leading a start-up or growing organization. Knowledge of the construction industry and the energy efficiency/home performance industry is preferred. Experience in managing a membership-based industry association is a plus and a passion for working in a membership environment is crucial.
The Building Performance Association is a membership-based industry association that was formed in 2018 through the merger of three existing residentially focused organizations (Efficiency First, Home Energy Magazine, and the Home Performance Coalition). There are currently 15 FTEs on staff and a budget of approximately $3.5m. The mission is to build the success of residential energy efficiency/home performance across the broad sector of the industry that supports it, including contractors, program implementers, utilities, non-profits, government agencies, training centers, and manufacturers and distributors of products. BPA’s vision is that all buildings will provide an energy efficient, comfortable, healthy and safe environment.
THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER POSITION
The CEO is the key management leader of the Association. The CEO is responsible for overseeing the administration, finances, programs, and strategic plan of the organization. Other key duties include fundraising and outreach to the home performance industry and key stakeholders.
The position reports directly to the Board of Directors.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Formal/Governance-Oriented
- Accountable to the Board of Directors and is responsible for executing the organization’s strategic direction in alignment with Board-approved policies and objectives.
- Works with the Board leadership to maintain the Board of Directors as a dynamic, vibrant oversight body that establishes strategic direction and represents the Association to key stakeholders and partners.
- Responsible for communicating effectively with the Board and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions.
- Organization Mission and Strategy
- Responsible for leading the Association in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission as defined by the Board of Directors.
- Responsible for implementation of the Association’s programs and activities that carry out the organization’s mission.
- In collaboration with the Board of Directors and key Association stakeholders, create a Strategic Plan to grow the Association, maintain financial sustainability, and provide a compelling level of service to Association members.
- Build alliances and relationships with, and act as point of contact for, key Association stakeholders and partner groups, including funders and potential funders.
- Represent the organization as required, including attendance at important functions, industry events, and public meetings.
- Develop a deep knowledge of the energy efficiency/home performance industry and the Association’s business environment, including key market actors, current market trends, critical funding organizations, and allies and potential collaborators.
- Financial Performance and Viability
- Responsible for the fiscal integrity of the Association.
- Responsible for fiscal management that generally anticipates operating within the approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization, and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position.
- Work closely with the Board Treasurer and key staff to submit timely and accurate financial reports to funders, key stakeholders and the Board of Directors, provide financial analysis of business and strategy decisions to the Board of Directors, and prepare annual budgets for approval by the Board of Directors.
- Develop resources sufficient to ensure the financial health of the organization including the development of funding proposals, including working with key staff and Board to identify potential funding sources, build relationships with funders, and submit successful grant proposals.
- Provide key staff with financial reporting and analysis to ensure the successful management of their respective activities.
- Operations
- Responsible for effective administration of the Association’s operations.
- Create and implement an operational plan that aligns short- and long-term objectives with the Strategic Plan and create a process for reporting progress to the Board and selected stakeholders.
- Lead and motivate staff to support the Strategic and Operational Plans, advance employee engagement and growth, and to work as a high-performing team across all divisions of the Association to grow the Association and deliver a compelling level of service to its members.
- Oversee all operations and Association activities to ensure they are consistent with applicable legal and ethical standards and the overall strategy and mission of the Association.
- Responsible for the hiring and retention of competent, qualified staff. Work closely with Human Resources key staff to develop effective hiring practices, address diversity goals, and promote staff performance, engagement, and retention.
- Establish and maintain a culture of teamwork, high performance, and commitment to providing compelling services to Association members.
- Responsible for signing all notes, agreements, and other instruments made and entered into and on behalf of the organization.
PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Transparent and high integrity leadership; ability to inspire confidence.
- Eight or more years senior management experience; CEO experience preferred.
- Solid, hands-on, budget management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision-making, and reporting.
- Demonstrated ability to oversee and collaborate with staff.
- Strong organizational abilities including planning, delegating, program development, and task facilitation.
- Ability to convey a vision of the Association’s strategic future to staff, board, members, customers, and stakeholders.
- Knowledge of fundraising strategies and funder relations relevant to the Association.
- Skills to collaborate with and motivate Board members and other volunteers.
- Strong written and oral communication skills; strong public speaking ability.
- Ability to interface and engage diverse stakeholder groups.
- A bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline.
SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Establish employment and administrative policies and procedures for all functions and for the day-to-day operation of the Association.
- Plan and administer the annual budget.
- Serve as the Association’s primary spokesperson to the organization’s stakeholders, the media, and the general public.
- Establish and maintain relationships with various organizations within the industry and utilize those relationships to strategically enhance the Association’s mission.
- Report to, and work closely with, the Board of Directors to seek their involvement in policy decisions, fundraising, and to increase the overall visibility of the Association throughout the industry.
- Supervise and collaborate with organization staff. Oversee all staff functions of the Association.
- Develop, implement, and report on strategic plan.
- Facilitate the Association’s Board and committee meetings.
- Review and approve contracts for services.
- Other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors.
