Celebrating Women in Weatherization: Michele York

"This is the time to join the world of weatherization! It is only going to get better from here! If you want a job that makes you feel proud of what you do, this is for you!"

Michele York – BIL Program Specialist, New Hampshire

How did you first get interested and involved in weatherization?

I have always loved the idea of solar and wind. I joined the Loudon Alternative Energy Committee (L.A.E.C.) as soon as it was formed so I could learn more about all the ways we can help our town save money and the environment. We started small by putting in LED lighting in all our buildings. Then, we had a solar array put on the roof of our town office. Since September 2021, our town office has spent only $93.00 on electricity. Next is one of our Fire stations (fall of 2024). In January of 2023, I saw an opening here at the New Hampshire Department of Energy, so I applied. I started March 10, 2023, so I have been here for 1 year. Everyone I have met in this job has been wonderful. I think it’s because people who want to help others have such big hearts.

Tell us about your current and past roles in weatherization.

I work in the BIL portion of WAP. This is my first job in weatherization.

What is it like being a woman in weatherization? Advantages? Challenges?

I think there are probably just as many women as men in weatherization (Editor note: It is getting better, but women are still underrepresented in weatherization). I feel that everyone is ready to help as needed. I am proud to work in an organization that is so open to women being in all different roles, right up to being a leader.

Why do you work in weatherization? What about your job makes you excited to go to work in the morning?

I want to keep learning about all the ways to help people in disadvantaged areas, as well as all over our state. The people make this job wonderful. I love it and love going to work every morning!

Do you have advice for other women interested in joining the weatherization field?

This is the time to join the world of weatherization! It is only going to get better from here! If you want a job that makes you feel proud of what you do, this is for you!
