2024 Impact Report

Our impact report gives a snapshot of the accomplishments we achieved in 2024. Through events, membership, and advocacy, we were able to reach even more members of the building performance industry and provide them with support.

Message from the CEO

Steve Skodak, CAE, CFRE

In 2024, our industry received a lot of support. With that, our association grew in more ways than one.

This past year, we increased our membership, hosted the second-largest conference in our 38-year history, expanded available resources, released a nationwide report, continued advocacy work, became an approved apprenticeship sponsor in several states, and established many new partnerships.

Internally, we continued work on our equitable policies and practices, and gathered our remote-based team to strategically plan and set multi-year implementation goals in several focus areas.

Of course, none of this work happens without the people who extend their hands to shake ours. I, in turn, extend tremendous thanks to our staff, Board members, Allies, Affiliates, sponsors, and volunteers—all of whom play a part in our association’s and industry’s success.

This impact report shows you our annual highlights, and I am humbled looking at all of them in one place–a powerful reminder of what we’ve accomplished together.

To forward progress,

1. Registered Apprenticeship Programs (RAPs)

In 2024, BPA launched its first Energy Specialist Registered Apprenticeship Programs as a verified sponsor, assisting employers with hiring, recruiting, and mentoring energy efficiency apprentices. To date, BPA has helped launch RAPs in states including Virginia, Maryland, Maine, Colorado, Pennsylvania, and New Hampshire.

As a U.S. Department of Labor-designated apprenticeship sponsor and a key collaborator with the Apprenticeships in Clean Energy (ACE) Network, BPA assists with designing and executing apprenticeships, registering them with the Department of Labor, providing hands-on learning opportunities, connecting employers with training opportunities.

BPA also developed a partnership with Everblue, a training provider, to collaborate on RAP implementation and integration with current programs in states such as Maryland, Nevada, New Hampshire, Virginia, Texas, and Hawaii.

"Our collaboration with BPA has been instrumental in creating a robust pipeline of skilled professionals in the energy efficiency sector. By combining our expertise in training with BPA's industry connections and program development capabilities, we're not just filling jobs – we're building careers and shaping the future of sustainable energy. This partnership exemplifies the power of collaboration in addressing the evolving needs of the clean energy workforce."

2. Energy Efficiency Jobs in America

With support from E4TheFuture, BPA released the 2024 Energy Efficiency Jobs In America (EEJA) report, an in-depth look at national and state-specific workforce data illustrating the growth and development of the energy efficiency industry in 2023. Based on findings from the 2024 U.S. Energy & Employment Jobs Report (USEER), EEJA calls for the attention of national and local lawmakers and policymakers to showcase why the industry is important to every state and how they can support it.

The 2024 report confirms that energy efficiency remains the largest sector of the U.S. clean energy workforce.

Pages from the Faces of EE Jobs report

As part of this project, BPA launched the Faces of EE campaign, featuring over 1,700 energy efficiency professionals from every state and Washington, D.C. Faces of EE highlights the individuals who work in energy efficiency and their stories, showcasing why they do the work they do and humanizing the industry.

Along with the report, BPA released a suite of national and state-level resources packed with compelling statistics that further underscore the industry's vital role.

3. Expansion of State Energy Office Support

Through a project with the Department of Energy’s Building Technologies Office and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, BPA increased its engagement and education to state energy offices on workforce development opportunities.

From July - December 2024, BPA hosted a series of webinars exclusive to state energy offices to provide insights on how they can effectively design and implement inclusive, sustainable state-wide energy workforce development programs.

As the leading voice for U.S. energy efficiency workers, the Building Performance Association (BPA) has the expertise and experience to help state governments secure funding and scale up their energy efficiency workforces.

4. State-Level Impact

BPA operates on both national and state levels, tailoring its work to specific needs of the area they are serving. Below are just a few examples of BPA’s state work in 2024.

Arizona

BPA carried out a successful development and educational plan for the Home Energy Rebates (HOMES & HEAR) in Arizona through its work with the Governor’s Office of Resiliency and energy efficiency/home performance contractors.

Efforts included:

Kentucky

BPA published its Kentucky Workforce Analysis report, the result of 9 months of thorough research on the energy efficiency landscape in Kentucky.

Created in partnership with the Office of Energy Policy and with funding from the U.S. Department of Energy's State Energy Program (SEP), this report was distributed to educate Kentuckians and state decision makers about local workforce barriers, resources, and opportunities for the industry.

Research efforts included several one:one meetings, in-person and virtual presentations, surveys, and more.

Maine

In partnership with Maine’s Governor’s Energy Office, BPA published its Maine Energy Efficiency Contractor Needs Assessment, identifying key strengths, challenges, and opportunities for the state of Maine.

This project was the result of in-depth research that included surveys, presentations, meetings, and other engagement activities with contractors and industry stakeholders within the state.
